Wasn’t one of the primary goals of EMR/EHR adoption to allow patients to access their medical records from anywhere they may be, say Maine or Florida? That piece is certainly missing. Without it, the ability to achieve the desired outcome of improved patient will be significantly hampered.
While we don’t know yet what Stage 3 will look like, interoperability is likely to be part of the equation. It needs to be. While there have been many hurdles, and continue to be, for facilities and practitioners to vault in their EMR journey, this may be the most difficult.
Because of proprietary hospital software programs, administrators have historically been loathe to open their architecture to competitors. It’s going to be an interesting challenge and one that all by itself may push off the MU Stage 3 deadline well beyond 2016.
