Understanding Windows 8 security

Unlike its predecessor, Windows 8 comes with antivirus / antispyware software preinstalled.  The program is called Windows Defender.

It replaces Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft’s free antivirus solution for its other operating systems.  Microsoft Security Essentials cannot be installed on Windows 8.  If you install another antivirus program, make sure you disable Windows Defender to avoid conflicts.   You may install another antispyware program, however, without causing any trouble according to Microsoft.

Windows Defender runs automatically in the background.  If necessary, you will be notified of any necessary action to prevent infection.

You can also run a manual scan of your computer anytime you feel your system may have been compromised.

To do so, move your mouse to the upper right-hand corner of the screen, click the search icon, and type defender in the search box.

  •  A Quick scan checks areas of your computer that are most likely to become infected along with the currently running program.
  • A Full scan checks your entire PC.
  • A Custom scan allows you to select what you want to scan.
